Why do most basketball players at all levels run much faster when they are going from defense to offense as opposed to going from offense to defense?
Suzy Merchant, head women’s coach at Michigan State University is doing a fine job in East Lansing. Her Spartans are 20-2 on the year. She had a great quote in the Lansing State Journal
“It’s that February fight. No matter what team’s playing, you like to see people playing for something – that every game matters and that every possession is important.”
‘Scoring the basketball‘ has been a favorite term for many basketball announcers these days. Hey, I wouldn’t expect them to score the football…
Do we really need to know about Richard Hamilton’s problem with head coach John Kuester? I don’t. What’s the big deal? Kuester elects not to play Rip. T-Mac has been playing well and Kuester settled on a rotation. A writer from the Detroit Free Press actually had two stories on this in their paper on Monday.
Kevin Love now has 37 straight double-double’s. I still can’t forget Jalen Rose and Stephen A. Smith laughing on draft night at Love’s ability to throw great outlet passes when the two were discussing the former UCLA Bruin.
Speaking of Jalen, his former boss at Michigan Steve Fisher is doing a great job at San Diego State. The former Michigan Wolverines head basketball coach is 23-1 on the year. Fisher was the head coach in Ann Arbor in 1989 when Michigan won the National Championship and later recruited the ‘Fab 5′.
Carmelo Anthony scored 50 points on the Rockets last night but Denver lost the game 108-103. That reminds me from back in the day when Bernard King of the Knicks dropped 60 on the New Jersey Nets at MSG but still lost the game. You hear all this trade talk on a daily basis involving the former Red Hook, Brooklyn native. I have an idea for Melo and his people; just go to Cleveland and help Dan Gilbert make good on his promise.
Ohio State men’s basketball is 24-0 on the year. Their freshman Jared Sullinger is the best player in the country.
I love the job rookie Landry Fields is doing for the Knicks. The guy was drafted in the second round (39th pick) out of Stanford; he drops 10 points per game and pulls down 7 caroms a contest. As a senior Fields led the Pac 10 in scoring but wasn’t invited to the pre-draft hype camps. Looking back, I didn’t see him on any lists of top players either. I’m sure he has a scouting report on him from a 2009-10 national basketball magazine that reads, “skilled and crafty but can’t carry a team.” See kids, it doesn’t matter what they say or think about you, get out there and work on your game! By the way, Fields spent four years in college, something you don’t see anymore.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have lost 25 straight games. On Wednesday night they host the Detroit Pistons.
